The TOEFL is a standardized test designed to measure the English language abilities of non-native speakers seeking to enroll in an English-speaking university. This test is accepted worldwide by over 11,000 universities in more than 190 countries. The TOEFL consists of a group of tests, the most popular of which are the TOEFL iBT and the TOEFL Essentials. The TOEFL iBT requires 90 minutes to complete, whereas the TOEFL Essentials is more rigorous and requires three hours to complete. The TOEFL is composed of four sections—reading, listening, speaking, and writing. A score on the iBT version of the test will fall in the range of 0 to 120, while a score on the Essentials version of the test will range from 0 to 12. Many universities require proof of English language proficiency, and the most selective universities expect to see a TOEFL iBT score over 100.

Meet a Jakarta TOEFL Tutor: Giorgia E.

Giorgia E. was born in Turino, Italy, and loved living there. "I was fortunate to attend a school that taught both Italian and English, and for me, English was always the harder of the two languages to learn!" she recalls with a laugh. Giorgia and her family lived in Turino until she had completed the eighth grade, at which point her father's company transferred the family to Miami. "I was really worried about what a culture shock moving to the United States would be," shares Giorgia, "but thankfully it turned out so much better than I expected." Outgoing and friendly by nature, Giorgia soon made new friends and threw herself into various activities at her new high school, holding officer positions in student government and a model United Nations organization, as well as swimming, running track, and playing tennis. When she struggled to master certain aspects of geometry, Giorgia's parents found her a private tutor who not only helped her master the math but also helped boost her self-esteem, showing her she could learn even the most difficult concepts with hard work and the proper instruction.

Giorgia graduated in the top ten percent of her class and while her parents were sad to see her move, they fully supported her decision to attend Dartmouth College. Giorgia loved having the chance to see more of the United States, and she majored in linguistics, seeking to understand systems of language as thoroughly as possible in the hopes of one day helping others master English as she had. "It's almost universally understood that the English language is an important factor in being successful in today's global economy," she says. "But so many people, many of my own family members included, never had the opportunity to learn the language, and that kept them from being as successful as they otherwise could have been."

After graduating from Dartmouth, Giorgia moved to New York City where she obtained a master's degree in teaching from Columbia University, followed by a TESOL certificate from New York University. Giorgia then accepted a position with an organization working with immigrant teens and young adults to improve their English-speaking abilities, and she was incredibly passionate about her work, settling into comfortable routines in her Queens neighborhood and building a happy life for herself. After a few years, Giorgia was contacted by a larger corporation providing English language instruction to students in Jakarta, and she jumped at the chance to experience life in a new country. Giorgia developed a reputation as a dedicated and effective instructor in the Jakarta area, and when she connected with Manhattan Review at an educational networking event, it was a perfect match. Giorgia is fluent in English, Italian, French, and Indonesian, and her students' feedback consistently praises her patience, as well as her excitement when she sees them mastering something that was previously difficult. When she isn't guiding future college students to their own TOEFL success, Giorgia enjoys exploring Southeast Asia, learning traditional woodworking and carving from a local expert, and exploring handmade crafts at Pasar Seni with her friends and colleagues.
