The TOEFL is a standardized test designed to measure the English language abilities of non-native speakers seeking to enroll in an English-speaking university. This test is accepted worldwide by over 11,000 universities in more than 190 countries. The TOEFL consists of a group of tests, the most popular of which are the TOEFL iBT and the TOEFL Essentials. The TOEFL iBT requires 90 minutes to complete, whereas the TOEFL Essentials is more rigorous and requires three hours to complete. The TOEFL is composed of four sections—reading, listening, speaking, and writing. A score on the iBT version of the test will fall in the range of 0 to 120, while a score on the Essentials version of the test will range from 0 to 12. Many universities require proof of English language proficiency, and the most selective universities expect to see a TOEFL iBT score over 100. Meet a Jakarta TOEFL Tutor: Trudie P.

Trudie P. grew up dreaming of traveling the world. Born into a large family in a small town, her dreams seemed like they were destined to remain just that, but she was determined to somehow leave small-town life behind in favor of exploring faraway countries and continents. As a young girl, Trudie also loved to pretend she was a teacher, and she would arrange her siblings around the table of her Kansas home and give them history lessons or impromptu spelling tests. "I had no idea how I would combine my dream of traveling with my love of teaching," admits Trudie, "but my parents raised me to believe anything was possible if I was just willing to work for it. I knew whatever I did would start with a college education." In addition to being a hard-working student, Trudie also held various student government roles in addition to competing in speech and debate competitions and participating in varsity softball and swimming. Her focus and dedication were rewarded when she was accepted to the University of California at Los Angeles, and Trudie was thrilled to begin her travel adventures by relocating to sunny Southern California.

During her undergraduate study, Trudie began working as a tutor through the university's learning center, and what started as a way to make some additional money also cemented her passion for helping others. Trudie graduated with a degree in history before pursuing a master's degree in teaching and a TESOL certificate from the University of Southern California. Equipped with impressive credentials and a desire to prove herself, Trudie joined an international non-profit focused on teaching English to students around the world. Trudie spent eleven years traveling and teaching in countries such as Bali, Thailand, and Sri Lanka, providing English-language instruction to children, teens, and adults. When Trudie had the chance to relocate to Jakarta, she decided it was time to put down roots, and she has lived in the exciting city ever since, eventually marrying and starting a family. When she came across an opening for an instructor at the Jakarta office of Manhattan Review, Trudie applied and was quickly welcomed to the team.

"I love living in Jakarta, and I love the work I do," shares Trudie. Trudie is a naturally gifted instructor who specializes in helping students prepare for the TOEFL and the IELTS, ensuring they have a strong grasp of the English language and are prepared to demonstrate their hard-earned knowledge on a test. "By the time my students actually take the TOEFL, they're so prepared, and they know exactly what to expect," she explains. "Everyone deserves the chance to obtain a college education, and for non-native English speakers looking to attend the best colleges, that starts with a high TOEFL score." When Trudie isn't helping her appreciative students prepare for important standardized tests, she enjoys watching documentaries, volunteering with elderly ESL students at a neighborhood learning center, and hosting visiting family members eager to learn about her new home.
