The IELTS is one of two major exams used by universities in the English-speaking world to assess English language competency (the other exam is the Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL). The IELTS is a British examination, and it is therefore favored by many universities in the United Kingdom. The TOEFL is an American test, and many U.S. colleges favor it over the IELTS. A number of postsecondary institutions in both the United States and the United Kingdom, however, will accept either the IELTS or the TOEFL, and we advise all of our test prep clients to verify the English requirements of their preferred undergraduate or graduate program. If you have a choice between the IELTS and the TOEFL, the best solution is to try practice versions of both tests, ultimately favoring whichever one is easier for you. It is important to note that there are some clear differences between the two tests…speaking skills, for example, are evaluated by audio recordings on the TOEFL and by in-person interviews on the IELTS.

The IELTS is graded on a scale of 1 to 9, with higher scores reflecting a better understanding of the English language and a stronger ability to communicate effectively in this language. Schools such as Harvard, Stanford, MIT, and Caltech require a minimum IELTS score of 7 in order to obtain admission to undergrade programs, although incoming students routinely have scores higher than this. Most colleges and universities in the United Kingdom and the United States suggest an IELTS score of 6 to 7 in order to be considered competitive for admission.

Meet a Jakarta IELTS Tutor: Deniz E.

From a very young age, Istanbul-born Deniz E. dreamed of one day becoming a world-famous actor. "I'd put on plays with my younger siblings and set up dolls and stuffed animals to be our audience," he laughs. "I charged my parents a small fee each to watch our plays, and all the money I earned went directly back into my home theater company, preparing for the next great living room production." Deniz easily found a home in community theater and made strong friendships among his fellow actors while learning about things like set design, arranging the actors on stage, and the use of music and lighting technology to help set whatever mood the scene called for. When he turned twelve and his father's company transferred the family to Berkeley, California, he was devastated to leave behind his beloved theater group and worried he might never perform on-stage again. "Thankfully, I found a great new home in Berkeley Rep, a world-famous theater group that was incredibly welcoming," he shares with a smile, "and even though some things were very different, many of them were the same, like being on a stage surrounded by lights and looking out at the empty seats, trying to imagine the audience on opening night." Deniz had been fortunate to obtain a basic grasp of English back at his school in Istanbul, but he struggled to use the new language on a daily basis. "I was so anxious, nothing made sense, and everyone spoke so fast, or at least it seemed that way to me." Deniz's family secured the services of a tutor to help their son become comfortable with this new language, and this was an important turning point for him. "Working one-on-one, where I could go at my own pace, learning English wasn't quite as daunting and actually became fun," he shares. When his father's company offered to extend his contract, Deniz whole-heartedly endorsed staying in California, and he soon came to view the Bay Area as his new home.

When it was time to begin applying to colleges, Deniz knew he wanted the best undergraduate education possible, so he worked with his tutor to prepare for the SAT, in addition to completing a prep course with Manhattan Review. Due to his stellar SAT score, plus his high grades and involvement in drama and other extracurricular activities, Deniz was accepted to Stanford University, where he majored in theater and performance studies while minoring in education. "I loved acting because it allowed me be whoever I wanted, and it also helped me connect with other people like me, so teaching drama seemed like the ideal career for me," says Deniz. After graduating from Stanford, Deniz moved down to Southern California and obtained a master's degree in education from the University of California at Los Angeles before accepting a position teaching drama to underserved high school students. During this time, Deniz realized how many of his students struggled with the English language, particularly when it came to writing. "I started having my students write out lines, mostly so they could learn them for whatever play we were doing, but also to help them become more familiar with grammar and other rules of the English language," he explains.

Deniz obtained a TESOL certificate from UCLA and after a few more years of teaching drama (and unofficially teaching English), he was recruited by a non-profit organization to teach English and drama overseas. Deniz was thrilled at such an exciting new opportunity and enjoyed teaching students in South Korea, Japan, Thailand, and Bali. After a few years, however, he decided he liked the idea of putting down roots and staying in one location to start a family. When an opportunity arose to teach English and drama in Jakarta, Deniz accepted the position and packed his suitcase. He soon found a home with the Jakarta office of Manhattan Review, and it was a win-win situation for everyone. Deniz loves helping Jakarta-based students master the English language in preparation of exceling on tests like the IELTS and TOEFL, and he continues to teach drama classes, too. His students appreciate his attention to detail, and there is regularly a waitlist to work with him. When Deniz isn't helping the next generation of English-speakers prepare for their own collegiate success, he can be found attending performances at local and professional theaters, working on a screenplay he hopes to one day direct, and visiting the neighborhood park with his wife and young son.
