The IELTS is one of two major exams used by universities in the English-speaking world to assess English language competency (the other exam is the Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL). The IELTS is a British examination, and it is therefore favored by many universities in the United Kingdom. The TOEFL is an American test, and many U.S. colleges favor it over the IELTS. A number of postsecondary institutions in both the United States and the United Kingdom, however, will accept either the IELTS or the TOEFL, and we advise all of our test prep clients to verify the English requirements of their preferred undergraduate or graduate program. If you have a choice between the IELTS and the TOEFL, the best solution is to try practice versions of both tests, ultimately favoring whichever one is easier for you. It is important to note that there are some clear differences between the two tests…speaking skills, for example, are evaluated by audio recordings on the TOEFL and by in-person interviews on the IELTS.

The IELTS is graded on a scale of 1 to 9, with higher scores reflecting a better understanding of the English language and a stronger ability to communicate effectively in this language. Schools such as Harvard, Stanford, MIT, and Caltech require a minimum IELTS score of 7 in order to obtain admission to undergrade programs, although incoming students routinely have scores higher than this. Most colleges and universities in the United Kingdom and the United States suggest an IELTS score of 6 to 7 in order to be considered competitive for admission.

Our professional educators are in high demand, and they have worked hard to create a specialized test prep method that is both comprehensive and targeted, ensuring nothing is overlooked so that you are prepared and confident on the day of your exam. They have helped countless students gain admission to top-tier English-speaking colleges and universities, including New York University, Columbia University, MIT, Johns Hopkins University, American University, Georgetown University, Harvard University, the University of Chicago, the University of Southern California, Stanford University, the University of Washington, Northwestern University, the University of Pennsylvania, Cornell University, Oxford University, the University of Cambridge, the University of California at Los Angeles, Princeton University, and elsewhere.

Meet a Jakarta IELTS Tutor: Diego V.

Diego V. was born in Tulum, Mexico, but moved to the United States in middle school when his mother was offered a position with an architectural firm in Chicago. "I was devastated to leave my grandparents and extended family behind," shares Diego, "but thankfully I was able to go back and spend most summers and school vacations with family members." Diego loved his Mexican heritage, from the artwork to the pottery to the beautiful jewelry and other items created through traditions and techniques that had been passed down from one generation to another. "I remember asking my abuela, my grandmother, one day, what will happen to these amazing pieces of our culture if younger generations don't learn about them and get involved…or at least share their existence with people who are interested?" According to Diego, that's when he knew he wanted to find a job that allowed him to be part of preserving cultures, ensuring things that shouldn't be forgotten would be protected for future generations to come.

Diego began bringing artwork and handmade crafts back to the US after visiting family in Mexico, and he organized an exhibition at his school where he shared his cultural heritage. A local university learned of his work and invited him to share his family treasures at a gallery exhibition about Latin American culture. Diego and his family ended up donating some items to the university's museum, and Diego decided a career working in a museum was the perfect way for him to protect his heritage and ensure valuable artwork would never be lost, continuing to inspire others who encountered it. Diego worked very hard in high school, participating in various clubs and extracurricular activities, while also being an active participant in his school's drama club and photography club. He also helped his school put on various events throughout the year that celebrated Hispanic and Latin American artists and musicians. Diego's hard work paid off when he was accepted to Yale University, where he majored in history before attending the prestigious museum sciences graduate program at Johns Hopkins University.

After graduating from Johns Hopkins, Diego accepted a position with a small museum in Santiago, Chile, and he spent a decade traveling throughout Latin and South America, working in various museums and learning the science behind preserving important historical works of art, from paintings to paper goods as well as handmade crafts and delicate jewelry. As Diego traveled, he became increasingly aware of how important the English language was for conducting business. "I realized that, not only did I want to help preserve culture and heritage, I wanted to help people move forward in their own lives, and helping them learn English was an important way to do that." While Diego had taught countless seminars, workshops, and continuing education courses on museum-related topics, he returned to school and obtained a Master of Teaching degree from American University before completing a TESOL certificate. He then resumed his traveling and museum-related work but also began teaching English classes both in-person and online, helping those without access to English-speaking instructors learn the language. When Diego had the chance to work with an organization in Jakarta seeking to improve local museums and preserve Indonesian cultural artifacts, he was thrilled to move to the dynamic and exciting city, and while he was there, he became familiar with Manhattan Review. When a position for an IELTS and TOEFL instructor opened up, Diego jumped at the chance to continue his mission of helping others master the English language, and he happily joined the team. When he isn't helping students achieve their own English-language success, Diego is most often preparing items for display at a local museum, volunteering at a local school where he teaches pottery and ceramics in an afterschool program.
