Meet a Jakarta SAT Tutor: Gina F.

Gina F. describes herself as being "incredibly" familiar with tutoring and personalized instruction from an early age. Diagnosed with dyslexia and executive function difficulties as a child, Gina struggled to focus in class and had a very difficult time learning to read. She repeatedly failed tests even though she had studied and while her parents told her she was smart, "I couldn't help but see myself as dumb and someone incapable learning," shares Gina. Gina's parents worked closely with her school to help her find a tutor who could teach her test-taking strategies, as well as show her how to learn in a way that made sense. "Working with a tutor didn't suddenly make everything in school easy for me," clarifies Gina, "but it made things possible. For the first time in my life, I realized I could learn and remember things. Not only did my grades start to improve, but my self-confidence rose, as well, seeing myself do things I'd previously thought would be impossible forever."

A native of Chicago, Gina grew up dreaming of attending Northwestern University but knew there was no way her family could afford such a prestigious school. "If I truly wanted to go there, I was going to need financial assistance," shares Gina. "I did a bunch of research and it seemed pretty obvious that high SAT scores were associated with a bunch of different scholarships. That's when I decided to get the absolute best score I possibly could on the SAT." Gina worked with her long-time tutor to prepare for the test, in addition to participating in an online group prep course that met weekly. Gina took preparing for the SAT very seriously, and her hard work and dedication paid off when she scored in the top percentile of all test-takers. Not only was she accepted to Northwestern University, but she also received a generous financial aid package that made it possible for her to make her collegiate dreams come true. Gina graduated from Northwestern with a degree in education before moving to Washington, DC, and obtaining a master's in teaching from American University, specializing in educational policy and leadership.

During her time in DC, Gina had the opportunity to complete a variety of internships, and upon graduation, she was immediately offered a job with an international company focused on educational policy. While it was a far cry from her Mid-Western roots, Gina was thrilled to have the opportunity to live overseas and quickly made Jakarta her new home. The company she worked for offered her the chance to work with local, national, and international schools on better serving the academic needs of students with learning differences, "which couldn't have been a more perfect fit," smiles Gina.

Passionate about ensuring equal access to education for everyone, Gina began offering evening and weekend seminars for neurodiverse high school students on how to prepare for the SAT, using the skills she'd developed from her own tutoring experiences, as well as her years spent teaching. Her courses became incredibly popular and when she was invited to join the team at Manhattan Review, it was a win-win situation for all. "I love working with students who think differently, who see the world differently," says Gina. "We need people who aren't afraid to think outside the box if we're going to change the world for the better." When she isn't making the SAT a little less terrifying, Gina enjoys going to outdoor music events, running marathons, and learning to make batiks and other traditional Indonesian handcrafts thanks to her roommate's patient instruction.
