The LSAT is purposefully designed to assess the skills required for the first year of law school. These skills include reading comprehension, reasoning, and writing. LSAT scores fall in a range between 120 to 180, with the median score being approximately 152. A median score, however, will not be enough to secure acceptance to a top-tier law school, and competitive scores generally fall in the 160s to 170s. The Law School Admission Council (LSAC) is the organization responsible for the administration of the LSAT, and they regularly track and report statistical information about those who take the test, analyzing their information as a whole while also dividing test-takers into subgroups. According to the LSAC, among the most respected law schools, successful applicants have an LSAT score in the 170s. In order to be competitive for the highest-ranking law schools, it is necessary to do well on the LSAT. Here at Manhattan Review, we can help you master all sections of the test, improving your reading comprehension and reasoning abilities while also strengthening your critical writing skills.

Meet a Jakarta LSAT Tutor: Emily P.

Emily was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, where her mother was a professor at a noted law school and her father was an attorney in private practice. "I easily could have chosen a different career path," shares Emily, "but honestly, I never wanted to. Watching my parents work so hard to change the world for the better made me want to give back, too, and to find a profession that allowed me to help people in ways that really mattered." Emily loved growing up surrounded by a large extended family, and she was particularly interested in the undertakings of her entrepreneurial family members. "They'd come up with these great ideas, and I remember being concerned, even as a kid, that someone might rip them off or try to steal what they'd worked so hard to create," recalls Emily. Always concerned with fairness and justice, Emily was an active member of student government in high school. She held officer positions on her school's speech and debate team in addition to participating in soccer, cross-country, track, and swimming. She also played the violin during school talent shows and even came in third in a state-wide competition. Emily took preparing for college very seriously and took advantage of all the SAT study resources offered by her school, which included weekend prep courses. Emily did very well on the SAT and even though it meant leaving Virginia, she was thrilled to attend Princeton University, where she double majored in pre-law and philosophy.

Emily knew she wanted to attend law school, where she planned to specialize in intellectual property law, protecting the ideas of creatives like her family members, but she also knew obtaining a high score on the LSAT wouldn't be easy. "I was fortunate to get connected with Manhattan Review, and I took an online LSAT prep course that not only helped me master the content of the exam, but it also helped me feel confident on test day. I had so much practice, I knew how to answer even the craziest logical reasoning questions." Emily performed exceptionally well on the LSAT, and her high score earned her offers of admission from multiple top-ranked law schools. Emily ultimately attended the University of California at Berkeley, respected around the world for its intellectual property law program. After graduating, Emily remained in the Bay Area for a few years, working with tech companies on issues such as patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets. Emily also began serving as an adjunct faculty member at a local law school, a position she greatly enjoyed.

When Emily's wife was offered the opportunity to transfer to the Jakarta office of her company, Emily continued working in intellectual property law with several global Fortune 500 companies, but she missed the fun and sense of fulfillment she'd felt teaching law students. When she realized Manhattan Review had an office in Jakarta, she immediately reached out about the possibility of getting involved through tutoring, teaching, or offering LSAT preparation workshops. Emily began offering group courses in the evenings and on weekends, and her prep courses fill up almost as fast as they are announced. "Nothing makes me happier than when my students succeed," smiles Emily. "I love when they tell me about their own academic or professional successes, and it's still such a thrill when they email and say, ‘Hey, I just got accepted to the law school of my dreams!'" When she isn't protecting inventors or preparing future lawyers, Emily can be found enjoying neighborhood parks with her wife, attending comedy shows with friends and colleagues, and volunteering at a local cat rescue shelter.
