The ACT is intended to reflect what students learned during high school and is composed of four multiple-choice tests—English, mathematics, reading, and science—as well as an optional writing portion. The English section requires a student to revise and edit a provided text; in addition, short essays in various genres offer rhetorical situations that must be considered before appropriate responses are selected. The mathematics section of the ACT assesses a student's knowledge of basic formulas and computational skills. The reading section is designed to measure a student's ability to closely read a passage, engage in logical reasoning about the passage using evidence, and combine information from multiple sources to produce specific answers. Skills such as locating and interpreting details, understanding the sequence of events, determining the meaning of context-dependent words, and analyzing claims and arguments are all assessed.
The science section of the ACT measures skills required to understand and work in the natural sciences, including interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and problem-solving, to name a few. The score range for each of the four required tests is 1 to 36. A composite score is created by taking the average of the four test scores and rounding it to the nearest whole number. In general, a "good" ACT score is any score falling at or above the 75th percentile, which equates to a composite score of 24. It must be stated that a "good" score is not nearly strong enough to gain admittance into a leading college or university, and among the most selective institutions of higher education, incoming students routinely obtain a composite score in the range of 33 to 35. In order to be considered a competitive applicant among the leading colleges, it is imperative to demonstrate a strong performance on the ACT.
Our ACT prep options are offered at a variety of times, including daytime, evening, and weekend hours, and meetings can be arranged virtually or in-person, depending on the prep option you choose and your current schedule. Meet a Jakarta ACT Tutor: Keesha D.
Keesha was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and for as long as she can remember, she has loved libraries. "It might be because my mother is a librarian," she smiles, "but libraries have always felt like second homes to me, even if I'm visiting one for the very first time." An avid reader from an early age, Keesha loved being around books and began volunteering at the library when she was in middle school, reshelving returned books and helping patrons locate specific volumes. "I loved connecting people with books," she shares, "and I can't remember ever wanting to be anything other than a librarian when I grew up." In high school, Keesha was involved in numerous extracurricular activities, playing drums in the marching band, running cross country, and writing for her school's online newspaper. She also hosted a book club in the school's library once a week where she and her classmates discussed books they were required to read for classes, as well as books they chose to read for fun. Keesha also volunteered once a week helping elementary school students practice their reading, "since everyone ought to be able to read and enjoy books."
When it came time to prepare for applying to college, Keesha took practice versions of the SAT and the ACT. When she performed significantly better on the ACT, she decided to enroll in a prep course offered by a local tutoring organization. In addition to working with a group of her peers, she also studied diligently on her own until she felt ready and prepared. Keesha's hard work and dedication paid off when she received an impressively high score on the ACT that earned her countless offers of admission to a variety of colleges and universities. Keesha chose to attend Tulane University, where she majored in English, and after graduating, she obtained a master's degree in library science from the University of Maryland, a U.S. News & World Report top five program for library science. While working as a librarian in Baltimore, Keesha also took the opportunity to obtain a master's degree in education, wanting to find a way to combine her love of books with her love of helping others. Keesha was soon offered a job with an international organization focused on improving the literacy of children and young adults, and she happily relocated to Jakarta where she was placed in charge of running a small library while also offering daily lessons in reading and speaking English.
Students loved working with Keesha, and when word of the work she was doing reached us at the Jakarta office of Manhattan Review, we offered Keesha the chance to join the team as an instructor. Her methodical approach to answering questions is beloved by her students, and they also appreciate her ability to summarize lengthy paragraphs into one or two memorable sentences. When she isn't helping students prepare for their own ACT success, Keesha can be found attending literary lectures around Jakarta, exploring local bookstores and markets searching for new reading material, and working on her martial arts skills at a neighborhood studio.
