ACT Tutoring in Jakarta

Are you a Jakarta-based student planning on taking the ACT as part of applying to college? If you are seeking the highest score possible on this important exam, consider partnering with the test prep experts at Manhattan Review. While the SAT is often assumed to be the most popular standardized test among high school students preparing to apply to college, interest in the ACT has increased significantly over the past few years. In fact, in some states, the ACT has become the preferred standardized test for students preparing their applications for undergraduate programs. If you are preparing for the ACT, there is no need to attempt to piece together your own study program, hoping you are covering the most relevant and pertinent information. At Manhattan Review, we have deconstructed the ACT and analyzed every section and every question in order to create the most comprehensive study syllabus available in the test prep industry. While many students enjoy learning alongside their peers, finding other students' comments to be insightful and educational, other students know that they do not perform to their full capabilities in a group setting. They worry about holding the group back and slowing everyone down because they need additional time to master something; alternatively, they become frustrated and even bored when they have mastered a particular concept but cannot move on until everyone in the group has similarly mastered the concept. If you know you learn best through a customized program of study and individual attention, consider working with one of Manhattan Review's experienced and professional private tutors. Our Jakarta tutors are the most respected in the business, with impressive careers and strong teaching backgrounds, and they are dedicated to helping you achieve your own success on the ACT.

Manhattan Review has been the industry-leader in standardized test prep services since 1999. When you partner with one of our esteemed instructors, you receive access to our unparalleled study syllabus, as well as our proprietary ACT prep resources and materials. If you are seeking to take your ACT prep to the next level, we encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity to work with and learn from some of the most sought-after instructors in the test prep industry. Our tutors have first-hand experience with a wide variety of standardized tests, having achieved their own impressive scores, but we do not only hire exceptional test-takers…we hire exceptional educators with strong backgrounds in teaching, learning theory, and applied instruction. When you work with a private tutor, there's no need to worry about how quickly you're learning or being afraid you're somehow holding up the rest of the group and keeping them from moving forward to another topic. When you study one-on-one with a private tutor, you are free to learn at your own pace, able to spend more time on particularly challenging topics or able to move on once you've successfully grasped something. Research consistently demonstrates that working with a private tutor helps to accelerate your learning, improving your knowledge of specific test content while also improving your self-esteem and confidence in your test-taking abilities. In addition to improving your knowledge and your ability to pace yourself over this lengthy exam, working with a private tutor can also help you gain a better understanding of your learning style, identifying those areas you already excel in while also helping you overcome any weaknesses that might negatively impact your ACT performance.

The ACT is intended to reflect what students learned during high school and is composed of four multiple-choice tests—English, mathematics, reading, and science—as well as an optional writing portion. The English section requires a student to revise and edit a provided text; in addition, short essays in various genres offer rhetorical situations that must be considered before appropriate responses are selected. The mathematics section of the ACT assesses a student's knowledge of basic formulas and computational skills. The reading section is designed to measure a student's ability to closely read a passage, engage in logical reasoning about the passage using evidence, and combine information from multiple sources to produce specific answers. Skills such as locating and interpreting details, understanding the sequence of events, determining the meaning of context-dependent words, and analyzing claims and arguments are all assessed.

The science section of the ACT measures skills required to understand and work in the natural sciences, including interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and problem-solving, to name a few. The score range for each of the four required tests is 1 to 36. A composite score is created by taking the average of the four test scores and rounding it to the nearest whole number. In general, a "good" ACT score is any score falling at or above the 75th percentile, which equates to a composite score of 24. It must be stated that a "good" score is not nearly strong enough to gain admittance into a leading college or university, and among the most selective institutions of higher education, incoming students routinely obtain a composite score in the range of 33 to 35. In order to be considered a competitive applicant among the leading colleges, it is imperative to demonstrate a strong performance on the ACT.

Meet a Jakarta ACT Tutor: Stellan R.

Stellan grew up in Michigan and credits the long winters for sparking his interest in science. "There are only so many shows you can watch and so much hockey you can play," he laughs. "When you live with six months or more of snow, you start to go a little stir-crazy stuck indoors all day, which is what prompted my dad to get me a book on science experiments." Growing up with his dad and younger brother, Stellan appreciated how supportive his family was of his love of learning, even when that meant trying experiments that didn't always turn out as planned. "The ceiling in my dad's kitchen is still stained orange in parts, thanks to the lava that exploded from a motorized volcano," admits Stellan. "I definitely accidentally started more than one fire, and I stained my hands blue for a week one time." In high school, Stellan was president of the Science Club and hosted a bi-weekly science-themed podcast, where he discussed advances in technology "in ways non-nerds could understand." While Stellan's school didn't have an official peer tutoring program, he and his friends worked hard to help one another. Stellan tutored his friends in biology, chemistry, and physics and in return received help with English assignments and essays, "which I very much needed and greatly appreciated," he recalls.

Stellan dreamed of being a science educator and decided to take the ACT rather than the SAT, given the inclusion of a science section on the ACT. Stellan worked remotely with a private tutor, creating an individualized learning program he stuck closely to that he credits with thoroughly preparing him for the ACT. "I took so many practice tests, I wanted to scream!" he says with a laugh, "but my tutor told me the hard work would be worth it, and she was right." On the day of the test, Stellan was prepared and ready to apply everything he'd learned, and his hard work and dedication paid off when he scored in the top percentile of test-takers. While he was accepted to numerous colleges and universities, Stellan chose to complete his undergraduate degree at Penn State, where he majored in education. After graduating, he attended Columbia University and obtained a master's degree in education before accepting a job as a science teacher in Brooklyn.

Stellan loved working with students, and after a few years of teaching in the public school system, he was offered an opportunity by an educational consulting company to provide remote instruction to students around the world, creating and teaching science-related courses and workshops for international high school students. While Stellan worried he might miss being in the same physical location as his students, he immediately took to virtual instruction and quickly came to see it as a way to assist more students eager to improve their knowledge of science. When the educational consulting company he worked for later mentioned an open position for an English-speaking science teacher at an international school in Jakarta, Stellan leaped at the chance and moved overseas, ready for another academic adventure. A few years later, Manhattan Review experienced a rare opening for an ACT instructor, and Stellan happily joined the team. Students regularly request to work with him, appreciating his insightful test-taking tips, as well as his ability to make the ACT less intimidating. When Stellan isn't helping future college students excel on standardized tests, he enjoys attending the symphony, going to the movies with friends, and hosting game nights with his roommate.
